Bits Of My Weekend 001

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The reason I settled on Call It Collect as title for my burgeoning blog stems from two sources. The first being three words written in the sleeve notes to Gil Scott Heron’s 1994 album Spirits. When asked what he called his sound he answered “I call it mine, I call it collect”. This stood out to me, and made me think of that Jim Jarmusch quote that has adorned a thousand MacBook desktops.

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination”

On that note I shall now patently steal a regular section from a blog I find myself checking on a daily basis. The blog is the incredi-twee “For Me, For You” – a beautifully presented and personal blog used to promote it’s creators jewellery line. She also runs a weekly feature entitled ‘Bits From My Weekend’, a series of photographs that capture the mood of her two sacred days.

Here is mine.

The Pursuit of Happiness

Pursuit of Happiness

Around 1968 John Lennon claimed that ‘Happiness is a Warm Gun‘. About 6 years earlier Charles Schulz stated that ‘Happiness is a Warm Puppy’ in the title of his 1962 Peanuts book. The fundamentalist evangelic preacher Ted Haggard absolutely loves homosexual sex and methamphetamines,  I’m fond of a good cardigan and a fine cheese,  and these people find their happiness in quilting.

I saw the film (500) Days of Summer last night, the touching (yet pretty twee) tale of Tom becoming besotted with Summer for all of 500 days.  We’ve all been there, we’ve all moved on, but the film demonstrates how one can get so utterly blindsided, hit for six and well and truly disarmed by somebody / something, if it helps get them closer to self fulfilment.

…and here we find KiD CuDi, Ratatat and MGMT suggesting weed and drunk driving may be one way of gaining happiness. Then again maybe not, but we should all keep trying.
